Opposite on
the eastern bank is the little hamlet of Landshipping which once
had a very productive coal mine until disaster struck. The Garden
Pit extended under the river and sadly the sea broke in on the
14th February 1844.. This was to be Pembrokeshire's worst mining
disaster with 40 people killed on that day, their bodies have
never been recovered. This was a small community so everyone was
affected, after this tragedy coal mining here was brought to a
halt. A memorial stone was erected in 2002 commemorating those
who lost their lives. Reading the list and seeing so many with
the same surname underlines the sadness of the event. These were
poor people trying to eke out a living.
