The Cleddau
is that significant river that cuts Pembrokeshire in two and which
at one time was navigable all the way to Haverfordwest. Ships
brought wines from Bordeaux and sent hides and wool out to Bristol
and the West Country. It was a bustling waterway, progress in
the form of the railway caused its decline. Fishing by means of
compass nets is carried out by a few licence holders but apart
from that most of the boating is for leisure. Just downriver on
the eastern side is Lawrenny, where better to spend a sunny afternoon
than sitting outside the Riverside Cafe enjoying good food, good
company and looking at the yachts coming and going. By the way
don’t instinctively turn your nose up at the bottled beer
made with seaweed - it really is very good.
