Built
by Robert Stephenson and opened on 5th March 1850 the Britannia
was originally a tubular bridge to carry the railway on its way
to Holyhead but a disastrous fire in 1970 resulted in the bridge
being closed and rebuilt as both a railway and a road bridge,
the railway running on the lower platform and the road above.
Visually it is very different from its previous form, the two
arches now providing delicate reflections in the waters of the
Menai Strait.
