A photograph can not easily show the scale of this massive hole - what you are looking at here is the heart of a mountain. The ore was extracted not by heavy plant and machinery as is done these days but with picks and shovels and by men suspended by ropes while hacking into the cliff face. No health and safety in those days and many of those workers trying to eke out an existence paid for it with their own lives.
