Pre 1970 everybody
who crossed the Menai via the Britannia Bridge had the chance
of seeing magnificent lions guarding the entrance, two on both
ends but now few of those who cross have any inkling of their
existence. The reason for this is that, originally, the only people
who used this bridge crossed by means of the railway. The lions
were such a feature that a short poem was composed in their honour
- it went like this - Pedwar llew tew, Heb ddim blew, Dau 'ochr
yma, A dau 'ochr drew. or in English - Four fat lions, Without
any hair, Two on this side, And two over there.
I learn that there is a campaign to raise the sculptures so that
they can be seen from the A55 which is the top deck of the bridge
but it is doubtful whether the bridge could hold the weight of
the lifting gear required as well as the weight of the statues
on top of the weight of the traffic crossing.
