The castle was built on a large rock and is a marvelous viewpoint for us in these peaceful days but in our more turbulent period the defending soldiers thought more about their safety than the wonderful views. It was the centre of the ancient kingdom of Deheubarth and Rhys ap Gruffydd successfully repelled those pesky Marcher Lords during the 12th century. Troubled times they were!
