Here the river Elan is interrupted from its original meander to reach the river Wye just south of Rhayader by the first reservoir in the chain, Craig Goch. Later we have Pen y Garreg then the long Carreg Ddu reservoir. The fourth reservoir, the Claerwen is to the west and feeds directly to Carreg Ddu. The Elan Valley is probably best visited by bicycle, stop where you like whenever you like, indulge in a mixture of challenges - good, steep hills to get your heart racing, miles of flat cycletracks and exhilarating brake-testing downhill runs!
