It was in the chapter house that the monks gathered daily to listen to a chapter from the Rule of St Benedict and to make their confessions. There were eight main services held each day. You may think that this would not leave a great deal of time for work but they countered this difficulty by starting their day at 2.00am. Their day finished at 8.00pm.
Of course television had not been invented then.
