As Solva is
on the coast, as it obviously is, the coastal path comes right
through and if you were coming from the Newgale direction you
would have passed a series of lime kilns - not an uncommon sight
on the coast. In days of yore there were no B&Qs or Wyevale
Garden Centres (other suppliers of garden and building products
are available of course but those two abovementioned are welcome
to contact me with a view to making a contribution to my vast
but dwindling funds!). Lime was extensively used as a mortar for
building or for coating exterior walls, it was also used on the
land to balance acidity in soils resulting in bigger and healthier
crops. There was a large movement of limestone by sea for these
purposes.
