First
built in 1852 as part of a chain of forts to protect Milford
Haven and the Royal Dockyards at Pembroke Dock from marauding
French. It was extended in 1870 to its present form and bristled
with armaments in the form of 16 18ton rifled muzzle loading guns
and manned by 150 men. It was decomissioned in 1929 and sold for
£160 in 1932. Recent
images of the inside do not suggest that much was done to
the fort so when it was sold again in 2005 for £150,000
it must have been considered to be a good return!
