Dick
Evans was the local butcher calling on people in the outlying
area with his van but when the call came, as it often did, he
was the coxwain of the Moelfre
lifeboat - one of those many men brave enough to venture out
into the rough seas to rescue sailors in mortal danger. Lifeboats
were not self-righting in those days and crews were all too aware
that each call-out could well be their last. Dick Evans was the
first man to receive two RNLI gold medals - the lifeboat equivalent
of the Victoria Cross.
