Having taken
on board a sustaining breakfast I head off to the south west of
the island and down to Newborough Woods. The name 'Newborough'
arises from the fact that when Edward I wanted to build Beaumaris
castle he needed to make sure that the Normans and their supporters
were in the majority so he moved the native population to the
west and their new home became Newborough.
The forest and dunes extend to 950 hectares, the forest was planted
in the 1940s to stop the terrible sandstorms that Newborough suffered.
There are many paths through the forest and, you may not know
this but Anglesey is an area where the red squirrel is firmly
established and is growing in numbers. With its very large car
park and excellent toilets this area is well worth a visit
