After
the Tudors the eisteddfod lost its support but we owe great thanks
for their revival to a man called Iolo Morgannwg. He was born
in 1747 in Pennon Glamorganshire. Like his father he was a stonemason
and moved to London in1773 where he became part of the Welsh literary
set. He was interested in, and collected, Welsh manuscripts and
those that he suspected had gone missing - he created.
That is, he forged them - but very cleverly.
