As
you walk through the field towards Tinkinswood you will notice
on the other side of the fence large moss covered slabs in a small
copse. This is the quarry that the stones came from to build the
burial chamber, there is a stile so you can walk in and have a
good mooch. The huge rocks strewn about have lain there on the
surface for 6000 years.
The capstone to the chamber weighs about 40 tons, to have got
that out of the ground would itself have been a great achievement
let alone dragging it to its site but to have raised the capstone
to its present position would have taken the efforts of 200 rather
strong people.
It
would also have taken a great deal of determination but who knows,
they might have taken a few hundred years in thinking about 'getting
round to do it'!
