The building of the present house was started in 1893 by John Cory, a coal baron. The landscaping began in 1894 and was completed in 1909. Sadly John Cory died in 1910, just a year later - but at least he lived to see the wonderful house and gardens that he had had constructed. He was 82 when he died so we can consider him brave to have even thought about the project.
