Eventually
a tunnel was built from the slate quarry through to the harbour
level which improved efficiency tremendously. They also had a
brilliant and commendable idea that would mean they could put
the waste slate to good use, they crushed it and used it as a
constituent for producing bricks. They could produce 50,000 bricks
per week.
As they were also producing granite by this time there was a great
deal of sea traffic with ships loading up with bricks, slate and
crushed and graded stone for road building. This was the time
of the Industrial Revolution and there was a ready market for
what the area produced.
