In the 1850s
quarrying seems to have been at full swing in both Abereiddi and
Porthgain with a new quarry opened up near the harbour, again
on the same lines as at Abereiddi where the slate had to be lifted
out of an ever deepening pit and, as that quarry was on the higher
ground it then had to be lowered down to the workshops at the
harbour level. This was very costly as eight tons of slate had
to be quarried in order to produce one ton of slabs or slates.
On top of that the seven tons of waste had to be transported to
the cliff edge for tipping into the sea.
This is one of the old quarries, but this one was for granite.
