The
purpose of a river is to drain water into the sea and this it
does with great determination, not even the pebble dunes of Pwlldu
are a sufficient barrier. The river just makes its way underneath!
The job of the men was to extract the limestone from the cliffs
by means of explosives and crowbars, a very precarious and dangerous
job. Gravity was of great assistance in getting the rocks down
to sea level and it was there that the women broke up the stone
and loaded it on to the boats waiting on the beach. The rising
tide floated them off to start their journey back to the West
Country.
