I mentioned
a covert import trade earlier on and I'm sure you will have realised
that I was referring to smuggling. Pwlldu can be considered remote
even today but it was more so in the 18th century. So many local
people were involved in smuggling in both a direct way (bringing
it in) and an indirect way (consuming it) that it was very difficult
for the excise man to catch the perpetrators. In geographical
terms Swansea was no further away from Pwlldu than it is now but
its remoteness and the close communities nearby must have been
like castle walls. There were, and probably still are many large
and hidden cellars in the local houses. In modern times there
is a secret buyer, someone who travels an area visiting shops
and sampling the effectiveness of the staff. In the 18th century
they had secret cellars, giving the opportunity of a completely
different kind of sampling! Tee hee!
Next to Caswell Bay there is a place called Brandy Cove. I wonder
why?
